Non-standard closedowns and startups.
#1
@RandomMe, you have to read this.

This thread is for archiving special closedowns/startups. WARNING: Video embeds are not allowed because some of them may be terrifying (especially the BBC Christmas 1992 closedown, which terrified everyone, even children and me).

Here is 1 example: Some ITV stations that refused to play the anthem (and some that DID play the anthem) actually PLAYED it during the special events.

One of them was Granada, which closed with a special slide with the anthem playing during the 1986 Queen's birthday. Yorkshire TV also played the anthem over a clock (just like one of the BBC Northern Ireland closedowns in the 90s) in 1982, during Queen's 56th birthday (4 years were left till her 60th birthday).

Tyne Tees and Grampian (source: a sketchy YouTube comment) also started their day with the National Anthem played over stills of the Queen. They would only show 1 still of the Queen, exposing her face. Then they would move to children's programming and start their day.

The closest thing where I live was when Canal 1 (RTP 1) in the late stages of the IVC era (1990 to 1992) saw the computer that generated the texts for the menus and the clocks (the one in the test card and the big old analog clock before startup and the news) failed at least two times.

Radio Television of Portugal also had a non-standard closedown where they showed footage of beach scenery before moving to some shapes forming the flag of Portugal then shapeshifting into a sunset and into a night before closing its imaginary doors and forming some barely visible text.

BBC 1 closed in 1992 with the Queen (during Christmas) because some dudes at the UK BBC studios thought it was "too jolly" to use.

hey man that 1986 to 1990 RTP 1 closedown was "standard" actually.

Non-standard in the stricter sense would be the closedown from the 1980 presidential elections, becuase it ended close to 4am and they were doing overtime

Of course.

But Portugal closedowns aren't allowed too. Reason: I only recognize Portuguese dubs of PAW Patrol.
