In 1970, The Global Television Network started out as a regional network serving Ontario. In 1974, Israel Asper, a business man based out of Winnipeg, bought a North Dakota television station and moved it to Winnipeg, thus forming CKND-TV. By 1988, Global's signal reach had expanded into British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Maritimes. In 1997, Global expanded and relaunched a former CBC station in Quebec City as "Global Quebec". In 1999, Asper's dreams of forming Canada's third national network came true when it bought Western International Communication's conventional television holdings. WIC operated three independent stations in the province of Alberta which at the time already carried a good number of Global programmes. It also operated Canada's largest local television station – BCTV – a CTV charter affiliate. In 2000, the three independent Alberta stations officially joined the Global Television Network. In 2001, a big affiliation switch involving most of Vancouver's television stations resulted in BCTV leaving the CTV network and joining Global. Today, Global operates 10 owned-and-operated stations under the "Global" brand, 3 owned-and-operated stations under the "CH" brand, two CBC private affiliates (one will join CH soon), and numerous specialty channels. As a result of BCTV joining Global, Vancouver became the network's national news centre, producing the flagship news programme "Global National". However most network programming is produced out of Global Toronto's facilities in Don Mills, Ontario – which also houses Global Toronto's transmission centre. The transmission facilities for Victoria (CHEK, BCTV), Regina (Global Regina, Global Saskatoon), and Winnipeg (CKND) was moved to the Calgary television centre in 2003. Now a total of 10 television signals originate of out Calgary, leaving only local news and GlobalNational in Vancouver to be produced in the 9 remaining cities. It's interesting to note as well that Global's performance in ratings increases as you travel westward across the country.
