Accident-prone, childlike, unemployable champion of the beige tank top Frank Spencer (Michael Crawford) somehow managed to wed – and conceive a child with(!) – the lovely Betty (Michele Dotrice). Ronnie Hazlehurst spelled out the name of the programme in Morse code on the piccolo to provide distinctive theme music. Both brilliantly and dubiously, Crawford made number 17 in the BBC's 100 Greatest Britons poll. Fans of his illustrious stage career may well have voted strongly, but you just know it had more to do with him ducking under a lorry while on rollerskates.
