ITV 1989 – 1998 Branding

During the summer of 1989 ITV released the “Get Ready” pre-launch campaign. During the last week of August ITV started to broadcast the new style of generic ITV promo, to help showcase the change. Coincidentally CBS in the United States were also using the tagline “Get Ready” for their 1989 image campaign, maybe ITV took inspiration stateside?

Finally on the 1st September 1989 ITV unveiled the ITV idents. Not all ITV companies were overly happy with the package, with Anglia Television, Channel Television, TVS, TSW and Ulster Television refusing point blank to use any of it: except for stings used for certain programmes like Sport, Children’s and Drama.

By 1993 nearly all ITV companies had dropped the ident expect Yorkshire (who replaced it in 1994) and Grampian who finally killed it off in October 1998, but during this time utilised invision more often. With the new franchise period, only five ITV companies continued to used the generic ITV promos: Border, Grampian, LWT, Tyne Tees and Yorkshire.
