ITV Schools on Channel 4 1987 – 1993

Starting September 14, 1987, educational programming for schools transitioned to Channel 4. The iconic mechanical clock that had been a mainstay was replaced with a modern, high-tech symbol and countdown sequence. This visual transformation was accompanied by new musical compositions – namely ‘The Journey’ and ‘Just A Minute’ both composed by James Aldenham (Brian Bennett). During this period, two additional musical pieces were also introduced, ‘Ticket To Freedom’ from the De Wolfe Music Library and ‘Animations’ by Dave Hewson.

After a 36-year run, ITV concluded its educational programming for schools in June 1993. While the concept of educational shows persisted, the baton was officially passed to Channel 4 starting September 1993. This transition ushered in an array of new programmes produced by independent creators, supported by Channel 4’s Educational Television Company, which had been offering programme support services since late 1992.

Interestingly, Channel 4 opted to continue the production of some of ITV’s most iconic educational series, such as ‘Stop Look Listen’ and ‘How We Used To Live’. Though these shows retained their original titles, they were essentially revamped, embodying only the names of their ITV predecessors.
