Al Jazeera was launched in 1996 from its base in Doha, Qatar. Originally staffed by many ex-BBC employees following the demise of BBC Arabic in 1996. The 24 hour news channel is aimed at a pan-Arab audience, and is now considered to be the most popular and fairly mainstream.
