Anthony Wilson

Anthony Wilson, often known as ‘Tony Wilson’, was a prominent figure in the British music and cultural scene. He was born on February 20, 1950, in Salford, England, and passed away on August 10, 2007. Tony Wilson was a television presenter, journalist, music executive, and entrepreneur known for his significant contributions to the music industry.

One of his most influential roles was as the co-founder of Factory Records, a Manchester-based record label that played a pivotal role in the rise of the post-punk and alternative music scenes in the late 1970s and 1980s. Factory Records signed iconic bands like Joy Division and New Order. Tony Wilson was also closely associated with the Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, which became a hub for the emerging rave and electronic dance music culture in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In addition to his music industry contributions, Tony Wilson was a television presenter, best known for hosting programs like “So It Goes” and “The Other Side of Midnight.” He was also the presenter of Granada Reports during the 1970’s and 1980’s, starting in 1973! Anthony also presented for BSB’s The Power Station during 1990. Monday 20th May 2002 saw Anthony return to Granada Reports, co-presenting with Lucy Meacock. 

He left a lasting legacy in the music and cultural history of the United Kingdom, and his influence can still be seen in Manchester’s vibrant music and arts scene.
