BBC Arabic TV was launched on March 11th 2008. The channel is publicly funded by British taxpayers through The Foregin Office. It is also the BBC's first publicly-funded international channel free to air to audiences in the Middle East and North Africa. BBC Arabic was originally launched in 1994 as a joint venture with Orbit TV but collapsed in 1996. Today it will have to compete in a very crowded marketplace against other news channels including Al Jazeera, Al Hurra and Al Arabiya
