On January 1, 2017, BBC One embraced a fresh thematic focus on “oneness,” unveiling a series of new idents directed by renowned British photographer Martin Parr. The BBC articulated that these new visual vignettes would explore the concept of “oneness,” capturing diverse groups of individuals across the UK who are united by common passions and interests. These groups were carefully chosen to mirror the multifaceted tapestry of modern Britain and to reflect the nation’s shifting mood through key events in the upcoming year.
Charlotte Moore, the Director of BBC Content, emphasised the importance of ensuring that the channel’s idents evolve to stay relevant. “Who better to bring this vision to life than Martin Parr, one of the most celebrated documentary photographers of our age?” she said. “His series of portraits keenly encapsulate the rich diversity of communities that make up the UK today.”
Throughout 2017 and into 2018, the collection of idents continued to expand, adding further depth and breadth to the evolving theme.
