Channel 5 2016 to 2020 Branding

Channel 5 unveiled a new look at 9.15am on Thursday 11th February 2016, after a 13 months project which saw Channel 5 reach out to media and PR agencies to ensure the re-positioning was attractive to advertisers as well as viewers, which was instigated by Viacom, which acquired Channel 5 in September 2014.It had been led by Channel 5’s vice president of marketing Jo Bacon and creative director Jody Malam who have worked with in-house consultancy 5Creative and several specialist consultancies. Bacon says she sees Channel 5 as a “playful challenger showing ” spirited TV with an emotional heart . Jo Bacon went on to say :”The new design and creative reflect the breadth of content that Channel 5 encompasses while strengthening our position among ABC1s and the 16-34 year old audience. If we can strengthen there, we will ultimately be more attractive to advertisers. People perhaps put us in a box, but this is a channel that makes important documentaries such as Body Donors or Ben Fogle’s New Lives In the Wild.

There amazing diverse content being created here and we are not a brand that has been given enough credit for that. Over recent years, Channel 5 has acquired the rights to show cricket highlights while it also airs high-profile US drama such as Gotham and the latest series of The X-Files. We are provocative but never cynical, salacious or gratuitous. Our content has more empathy than people expect,New York-based Gretel has designed the composite logo, which has been adapted for other channels, including 5Star, 5USA and on demand player My5 (formerly Demand 5). The patterns have also been extrapolated for use on bumpers and are designed with flexibility in mind so that they can suit different moods and styles of content.
