CBC

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was formed by the Federal Government in the mid-1900's to combat the ever increasing influence of American Television. The initial plan was to have the government establish owned-and-operated CBC stations in the large metropolitan areas, while smaller areas would be served by private CBC affiliates. The first station to launch in the network was CBFT Montreal on September 6, 1952. CBLT Toronto launched two days later. In 1953, Western Canada saw the launch of its first TV station from CBUT Vancouver. In 2000, CBC Television drastically cut the number of regional productions it produces, including scrapping the late night regional news and cutting the 6pm news to only 30 minutes. The only regional production most CBC regions produce is a 30 minute regional segment on "Canada Now" Today, the CBC English Television Network is made up of 17 owned-and-operated stations and 12 private affiliates. A plan is in place for the CBC to start phasing out private affiliate service and establish transmitters in areas CBC O&O stations are not currently present. CBC's main transmission centre for the entire network is based out of the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in downtown Toronto. Most CBC national programmes are also produced out of this facility, and is also the home of the CBC National Newsroom.
