HTV

HTV (Harlech Television) was awarded its broadcasting contract by the Independent Television Authority (ITA) in July 1967, taking over from the previous holder, TWW. Although the ITA did not publicly state the reason for the change, it was widely speculated that TWW’s decision to locate its corporate headquarters in London – rather than within its transmission region – was a significant factor. In contrast, Harlech chose to base its headquarters within the broadcast area, operating out of TWW’s former studios in Pontcanna, Cardiff, and Bath Road, Bristol.

Unwilling to invest in the new consortium, TWW opted to terminate its broadcasts prematurely on March 4, 1968, selling its remaining airtime to Harlech for £500,000. Since Harlech was not yet prepared to launch its own service, an unbranded emergency broadcast was temporarily run by former TWW staff. Harlech Television officially began its operations on May 20, 1968.
