British Caledonian was formed when Caledonian Airways took over British United Airways in 1970. British United, itself was formed from a number of smaller airlines, including Silver City. The merger meant the new airline, which was based at Gatwick, could move away from being a charter carrier to providing scheduled services. In December 1987, it was gobbled up by British Airways, a fate shared by the smaller Dan Air in 1992.
