The Associated Broadcasting Company, later known as ATV, was granted the franchise to broadcast to London and its surrounding counties on weekends, starting on September 24th, 1955. Three weeks later, the company changed its name to Associated Television (ATV) to avoid a legal dispute with an existing ABC. Additionally, ATV was awarded a weekday franchise to broadcast to the Midlands, commencing on February 17th, 1956.
ATV London came to an end on July 28th, 1968, as the franchise was awarded to the London Television Consortium by the ITA. However, ATV was granted the Midlands franchise for seven days a week, operating under the name ATV Network, and this began the following day. Eventually, ATV was forced to sell a 49% stake in the company, and on New Year’s Day 1982, the company ceased to exist, and Central Independent Television was established.
