The launch of Television Wales and the West occurred on January 14, 1958 at 4:45pm with a live ceremony led by station chairman Lord Derby, Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards, and Alfred Francis and hosted by chief continuity announcer, Bruce Lewis.
TWW lost its franchise in 1967 to the Harlech Consortium, who promised a bright future of high-quality entertainment and documentaries. Despite having several months left on their contract, TWW ended their franchise early in protest and sold the remaining five months to Harlech for £500,000, even though Harlech was not yet ready to start broadcasting. The ITA established a temporary service, the Independent Television Service for Wales and the West, using the former TWW Pontcanna studios in Cardiff and staffed by former TWW employees until Harlech (later renamed HTV) was ready to take over on May 20, 1968.
