Westcountry Television won the 1991 franchise round to broadcast to the South West. Unlike their predecessors, Westcountry decided to have their own studios at Langage Science Park on the outskirts of Plymouth. Their focus was on broadcasting 11 hours of regional programmes, a few of which were broadcast on ITV or Channel 4.
Westcountry also created an opt out news bulletin during Westcountry Live where you got regional news closer to you. Studios were in the North (Barnstaple), East (Exeter), West (Truro) and South (Plymouth).
Westcountry were taken over by Carlton on 25th November 1996 after a massive bidding war between them, GWR Radio, HTV and United News and Media. The Westcountry idents were dropped and in September 1999 they became known as Carlton Westcountry. It became ITV Westcountry in 2004 and was merged with ITV West to become ITV West Country (West). This resulted in the closing of the Plymouth studios.
