S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru), the first television channel catering to Welsh-speaking audience, is the fourth oldest TV channel in the UK after BBC One, ITV, and BBC Two. It was launched one day before Channel 4 in the rest of the UK.
Initially, S4C offered bilingual content (Welsh and English) outside peak hours and English-language programmes, sourced from Channel 4, during peak hours. With the advent of digital television, S4C added a second service, S4C Digidol, which was entirely in Welsh. Upon the completion of digital switchover in Wales in 2010, S4C’s analogue bilingual channel was discontinued, and S4C Digidol became the default channel, available on Freeview, satellite, and cable, and broadcasting exclusively in Welsh.
