Hard to believe but Crimewatch was originally an experiment which was only to last for three programmes and very few police forces were willing to take part at first. By the end of 1984, many more police forces realised just how successful this programme had become and over the decades some of the country's nastiest villains have been captured as a direct result of calls to the programme.
