By 1984, the 11pm open was tweaked slightly – the logo would appear to grow from the Statue of Liberty’s torch before animating as usual. Former WCBS anchor and future Nightline contributor Dave Marash – likely with trademark beard – was hired to present the 11pm “cover story” report. The “cover story” concept was used prominently at NBC O&O stations KNBC and WRC, among others.
