KDFW-TV signed on in 1949 as CBS network affiliate KRLD-TV, and was the third station in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, next to WBAP-TV (now KXAS-TV) and KBTV-TV (now WFAA-TV). During its years as KRLD, the station became famous for hosting the CBS Television’s network coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, headed by a young Dan Rather in November 1963. In 1970, KRLD became KDFW. And in 1994, KDFW was sold to New World Communications. In 1995, in what is the largest affiliate swap in Dallas TV history, KDFW assumed the Fox affiliation from KDAF-TV, Channel 33, now a WB Network affiliate.
Ironically, KDAF, one of the original Fox network affiliates in 1986, had changed its call letters from KRLD-TV to KDAF-TV following its purchase from Metromedia Television by Fox in 1986. KTVT-TV, Channel 11, assumed the CBS Network affiliation. In 1997, the station was turned over to Fox Television Stations. The station co-owns and operates independent station KDFI-TV Channel 27.

KEYE began life as KBVO in 1982, and became affiliated with the Fox Network when it began a few years later. With the sale of KTBC to Fox Broadcasting in 1995, KBVO’s owner, Granite Broadcasting, agreed to swap networks. As part of the change process, KBVO was rechristened KEYE, the letters EYE being a pun for the CBS’s giant Eye symbol. In 2000, Granite Broadcasting decided to sell several of its stations, including KEYE.
The station was officially sold a few monts later to the CBS network itself, which owns its flagship stations in New York and Los Angeles, as well as in Dallas and several other major markets. Two of KEYE’s former anchors have gone on to networked programmes, like NBC’s “Access Hollywood.” Weekend anchor Shaun Robinson joined their team immediately after leaving KEYE. Another Hollywood reporter, Jason Feinberg of the E! Network, came to that channel from “The EYE.”

KTBC is Austin, Texas’ first television station, that signed on Thanksgiving Day 1953. The station was owned by Lady Bird Johnson, wife and future First Lady to President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Because they were the only game in town, the station, like most channels of that day, got to pick from a selction from all the major networks: NBC, CBS, and Dumont.
KTBC made local programmes like “The Uncle Jay Show,” a children’s variety and cartoon programme, and “The Darrell Royal Show,” a sports commentary programme hosted by a University of Texas football coach. When other channels began to appear in Austin, KTBC chose to align itself fully to the CBS network, and remained with that affiliation until 1995. In 1995, KTBC’s then-owner, New World Television, sold all of its assets to the Fox Television Stations Group. KTBC was now in the hands of the Fox Network, and obviously, the station’s affiliation would change accordingly.

KTVT-TV signed on the air in 1955 as Independent station KFJZ-TV Channel 11. In 1960, upon its sale to Gaylord Broadcasting Company, KFJZ changed its calls to KTVT. KTVT also had the distinct honour of being one of the first superstations in the early 1980s, and also served as the home for many years of Texas Rangers baseball.
In 1994, KTVT dropped its national feed and announced that it was assuming the CBS Network Affiliation in 1995 from KDFW-TV. Gaylord Broadcasting sold KTVT to Viacom in 1999. It also operates UPN affiliate KTXA-TV Channel 21.
