While many speculated Charles Gibson to be the natural choice to succeed Jennings, ABC went with the somewhat surprising choice of an anchor duo – weekend anchor Bob Woodruff and correspondent Elizabeth Vargas. Their new World News Tonight premiered January 3, 2006, with a graphics change (but keeping the set and music). This edition, with Vargas presenting from the studio and Woodruff presenting from Iran, showcases what is expected to be normal procedure – one anchor on the road, the other in the studio.
