The Steamie

The Steamie is the nick-name for the Public Wash Houses provided by urban councils in Scotland. Although most tenement property had their own wash houses, access was by rota and water had to be heated using your own fuel. The public wash house for a small fee provided instant access, unlimited hot water and drying facilities. Steamies also had provision for bathing, with private baths, sprays (showers) and often a swimming pool. The Steamie was originally a touring stage play, but this TV adaption was voted the 2nd most loved STV production in 2009. Elaine C Smith was the original Dolly, but Eileen McCallum was cast due to Elaine's pregnancy at the time of filming.
