This series by Basil Boothroyd was adapted from stories by H.F. Ellis set in a 1940s school. Arthur Lowe starred in the title role as a maths master obsessed by the honour of the school, the high cost of pen nibs and the sneaky tactics of his arch enemy, Matron (Marion Mathie). Harry Andrews played the headmaster. The series was recorded just a few weeks before Lowe died on 15 April 1982.This clip is from Series 1, Episode 1.
