Sony Movie Channel

Sony Movie Channel UK on 3 May 2012. Announcing the plans, Kate Marsh, senior vice president, broadcast and channel development, for SPT, said: “Movies are a strong driver in the pay-TV world so we’re very excited to launch Sony Movie Channel in the UK. Offering a wide variety of contemporary film entertainment every day, the scheduling will attract movie lovers of all tastes, helping advertisers reach a range of demographics.On 10 January 2017, the channel replaced Movie Mix on the Freeview and Virgin Media platforms, becoming free-to-air for the first time.

Movie Mix

The channel launched on 15th July 2009 as The Big Deal, which broadcast a live interactive quiz show 7 days a week. In November 2009 before a Teleshopping channel, before trying to introduction a pay-per-view film service on 12 April 2011, was which failed by 27th April 2011, thus the Teleshopping continued.On 6 December 2012, The Big Deal was renamed Movie Mix and acquired a 24-hour broadcast slot, continuing to air teleshopping, as well as a classic movie each night. On 17 January 2013, Movie Mix began to simulcast the full More Than Movies schedule but retained its own Movie Mix branding. The channel initially remained owned and operated by Cellcast subsidiary Square 1 Management,but was licensed from Sony Pictures Television who supplied the channel programming. In March 2014, Cellcast agreed to early termination of its exclusive rights for Movie Mix for a one off payment of £2.98m from Entertainment Networks, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Television. On 22 March 2016, More Than Movies was closed down and was replaced by True Crime, but didn’t affect Movie Mix, which now broadcasts its own programming. On 12 August 2016 Movie Mix began testing on Virgin Media and was launched on 25 August 2016.

2017 – 2019

In December 2016 Sony announced Movie Mix would be re-launched as “Sony Movie Channel” which itself would become free-to-air channel on 10 January 2017 with “enhanced scheduleKate Marsh, executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television’s Western Europe International Networks division said “Sony has a rich cinematic heritage. With our knowledge and love of movies we want to present the best possible movie channel for audiences across the UK, The cinematic new look reflects the new channel content offering – favourite movies you will know and love.
