Jimmy Perry and David Croft inaugurally paired for this project. Originally named The Fighting Tigers, it was inspired by Perry's stint in a local defence group as a 17 year old (Private Pike loosely based on himself). The antics of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard clocked up 80 episodes spanning nine years, plus a 1971 film, radio versions, and a stage show. Whilst the strong ensemble cast and appealingly fraternal nature of scenes contribute greatly to Dad's Army's popularity, Arthur Lowe's impeccable portrayal of Captain Mainwaring is clearly the linchpin.
