The idea for Getting Sam Home had come from a novel that had been originally published by the show's writer, Roy Clarke in 1974. In the original novel version, the plot had centred on Compo, Clegg and original third man leader Cyril Blamire. (following Michael Bates' death from cancer in 1978, Blamire was changed to Foggy Dewhurst for the TV version). As well as being a feature length episode Getting Sam Home was the first not to have a laughter track and was filmed entirely on location in Yorkshire.
