Thames Start Up

By 1979 Thames was still starting up in this stilted fashion. Other franchisees like Westward and Southern created beautiful start-up films for their regions, but Londoners only ever saw two stills! The audio clip reveals how sternly Philip Elsmore used to deliver his ITA announcement in the late 1960s, before the 'Salute to Thames' music began. By 1979, he had re-recorded it because of the IBA name-change and he sounds less austere.
