BBC One 2006 – 2016 Branding

On October 7, 2006, at 10am, BBC One unveiled a breathtaking new visual identity centred around the motif of a circle. This refresh introduced eight innovative idents, incorporating diverse elements like soaring kites, daredevil motorbikes circling the Wheel of Death, illuminated apartment windows, and even whimsical, computer-generated swimming hippos, all designed to complete the iconic circle that symbolises BBC One.

Red Bee Media, formerly known as BBC Broadcast, conceived the new identity, marking the end of a fifteen-year association between Lambie-Nairn and BBC One. Imran Hanif crafted the accompanying music, while the channel’s signature colour, red, was retained. For typography enthusiasts, a custom BBC One typeface was developed by Jason Smith at Fontsmith.

Peter Fincham, BBC One Controller, commented, “In a market teeming with competition, a channel must distinguish itself. Our new identity is grounded in the everyday yet celebrates the extraordinary. It spans a wide array of visuals – from adrenaline-pumping motorbikes to synchronized hippos – capturing both warmth and dynamism. The circle, a longstanding symbol for BBC One, is reimagined here in a way that’s modern, forward-looking, and surprising.”

Naomi Gibney, Head of Marketing for BBC One, added, “The cornerstone of the new identity was simplicity. Red Bee Media tackled an incredibly challenging brief to distill the branding into a simple, yet true, concept that celebrates BBC One’s unique role in uniting people. Their execution beautifully encapsulates those magical moments when such unity occurs.”

The new identity was the collaborative effort of Red Bee Media’s Executive Creative Director, Charlie Mawer, alongside designers Grant Gilbert and Amy.

BBC One Brand Refresh 2009 – 2016

On May 2, 2009, BBC One revamped its circle idents with re-edited versions that featured the BBC One logo appearing more promptly, accompanied by a refreshed soundtrack. While the Bikes, Capes, and Hippos idents retained two variations, the Surfer ident remained unchanged. At this juncture, the Moon and Windows idents were officially retired from the lineup.
