On Friday 8 January 1988, LWT finally responded to the IBA’s concerns, and with its eyes on the next franchise round launched a proper weekend news service for the first time. Screen News was awarded the first two year contract, beating off twenty other applications. In the Summer of 1988, The Six O’clock show was axed and replaced with Friday now, which resulted in the main Friday bulletin becoming a stand alone programme. In September 1989, both were replaced with Six O’clock live, with LWT news appearing at all other times.
