The ITN News at 545 began when ITV moved the news from 5.50pm to 5.45pm and extended it by 5 minutes on 30th August 1976.

Computer graphics arrive on Monday 4th April 1988 and the News at 545 was given a new look. ITN dispensed with the main presenter and instead a “team” of newscasters – Alastair Stewart, Fiona Armstrong, Nicholas Owen, Trevor McDonald, Sue Carpenter and Carol Barnes. Phil Roman provides the voice overs on the titles. The studio background is still keyed in, though this too has been generated electronically.

On 13 February 1989, with the introduction of a national weather forecast at the end of the programme led to the bulletin’s timeslot starting earlier at 5:40pm.

Early Evening News began on Monday 9th March 1992. Presented from the newsroom. New voice overs were provided by Andrew Burt.

In November 1992 ITN updated its logo and there was a slightly different opening sequence and the Early Evening News title was overlaid. Voice over still provided by Andrew Burt.

Monday 8^th March 1999 brought the biggest change to News on ITV. After much debate and a challenge from the ITC, ITV moved its main bulletin to 6.30pm and re-named it the ITV Evening News.

The 2nd February 2004 saw the formation of ITV Plc by the merger of Granada and Carlton. The ITV1 News service was given a new look which was adopted by the ITV English regions to give the news a corporate look.

On 16th January 2006, ITV news was given a new look.

On November 2nd 2009, ITV News was relaunched with a new look of black and yellow to match the ITV1 presentation branding. Big Ben is not the main property of the brand as it once was in an attempt to make the output appear less London-centric.

On Monday 14th January 2013, ITN news was given a new look to co-incide with the rebranding of ITV network. In October 2015 the bulletin was formal renamed “ITV Evening News.

From January 2017 Mary Nightingale become the main sole presenter.
