BBC1 1991 – 1997 Branding

On February 16, 1991, at 7am, BBC1 revealed a reimagined visual identity. Crafted by Martin Lambie-Nairn, this new globe marked BBC1’s inaugural foray into corporate branding. The innovative design captivated viewers with its mesmerising world of shadows and reflections. Notably, this was the first ident to be played from a laserdisc. However, the actual ident did not make its on-screen debut until 9am.

For the first time outside of the Christmas period, both channels embraced a unified visual aesthetic, although BBC2 would later modify its design starting in late 1992. For BBC1, the changes were subtle yet impactful: while the channel ID continued to feature a stripe running down the left-hand side of the screen, the text font was updated to Futura Medium.
